In February 2025, Fudan International School of Finance’s FMBA program students embarked on a transformative overseas module in Singapore. Blending academic rigor, industry immersion, and cultural exploration, the module equipped future financial leaders with global perspectives and practical insights into finance, governance, and innovation.

Academic Excellence: Leadership and Global Economic Trends

Professor V. Paddy Padmanabhan from INSEAD Asia Campus delivered a masterclass on “The Phoenix Encounter Method: An Agenda for Renewal and Transformation”. Through case studies like Gillette’s rivalry with Dollar Shave Club and Ant Group’s fintech breakthroughs, he highlighted strategies for digital transformation and leadership. His four-step framework—identifying tech trends, envisioning disruption, constructing extreme scenarios and building defenses—equipped students with actionable strategies for navigating technological upheaval and corporate reinvention.

At National University of Singapore (NUS), Associate Professor Gu Qingyang analyzed shifting global economic dynamics. He emphasizing ASEAN’s growth potential under the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and Singapore’s pivotal role in fostering China-ASEAN collaboration across finance, sustainability, and smart city development.

Industry Insights: Decoding Singapore’s Financial Ecosystem

A visit to the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) offered deep dives into its unique “triple mandate” as a central bank, financial regulator, and development authority. Dr. Pei Sai Fan, visiting professor of National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University and Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, former Director of MAS Academy, explained Singapore’s exchange rate-centered monetary policy and its “BBC framework,” which ensures currency stability and economic resilience. Participants also explored MAS’s fintech sandbox and green finance initiatives at MAS gallery, gaining insights into sustainable financial ecosystems.

At Financial Alliance, Singapore’s largest independent financial advisory firm, the sharing session demystified Singapore’s family office operations and global asset allocation strategies. Discussions covered Singapore’s tax advantages, cross-border wealth management, and the 13O/13U schemes attracting ultra-high-net-worth individuals.

Cultural Immersion: Innovation Meets Heritage

Beyond finance, students engaged in Singapore’s vibrant culture. The award-winning Chinatown Mystery Game challenged teams to solve puzzles across temples, heritage sites, and hawker centers, celebrating the city’s multicultural tapestry. A river cruise along the Singapore River traced its evolution from fishing village to global trade hub, while Gardens by the Bay showcased cutting-edge vertical greenery and sustainable urban design. Visit to the National Gallery experienced the unique artistic and cultural charm of the Southeast Asian region.

Global Networking: Celebrating Achievements

The overseas module concluded with a farewell dinner at CHIJMES, in one of Singapore's important historical monuments. Professor Yang Chunliu, the Academic Director of FISF’s Full-time FMBA program, summarized the learnings and achievements of the Singapore overseas module for students.

Professor Zhu Feida, Aptos Move Chair Professor, Associate Dean, Partnerships and Engagement of Singapore Management University, President of Fudan University Alumni Association Singapore, shared insights on Web3.0 trends and fintech opportunities. He also introduced an overview of Fudan alumni in Singapore.

FMBA student Huang Yuyang, pursuing a dual degree at Singapore Management University, also shared her experiences of studying and living in Singapore. Professor Yang Chunliu then awarded certificates of participation to students, sealing the experience with a custom FMBA-themed cake and Lantern Festival traditions-Tangyuan.

"This Overseas Module brought together students from four different FISF cohorts (2023 and 2024) across full-time and part-time courses, offering a unique chance to interact with peers from the wider FISF community. The first two days were dedicated to academic sessions, featuring esteemed professors from NUS and INSEAD, as well as leaders from MAS. These sessions provided a comprehensive understanding of Singapore's regional and global role, its focus on financial regulatory innovation, and its efforts to boost regional trade. The trip was rounded off with delightful cultural experiences and a gala dinner on the final night, where everyone celebrated the successful completion of the trip, new friendships, and a deeper understanding of Singapore."
